EPI is committed to the conservation of the environment. Whilst working on geophysical operations worldwide, our consultants liaise with the client and contractor companies to help protect the environment.
Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs)
Dedicated Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) are required for seismic surveys in many areas of the world to adhere to National and International Guidelines.
It is now a requirement for any marine seismic survey carried out under the auspices of the J.N.C.C. (Joint Nature Conservation Committee) that the client can demonstrate that no disturbance has been caused to the natural cetacean population. This translates in practice to contracting specialist MMOs to be onboard the vessel at all times during the survey to record precisely the effects of the work being carried out.
We can supply MMOs from a team of observers who have extensive practical marine experience, including qualified marine biologists, fishery officers and former marine mammal medics for operations worldwide. All observers are fully trained in offshore survival techniques and health and safety requirements.
EPI’s MMOs work closely with
the J.N.C.C. on a regular basis. This means that our clients
have the assurance that they have adhered to this important
aspect of their exploration license.
The insistence on practical experience, coupled with a J.N.C.C. approved training programme provides the operation with the professional integrity required to satisfy the J.N.C.C. standards which, in turn, leads to satisfied clients.

Passive Acoustic Monitoring Systems (PAM)
There is a concern particularly during hours of darkness or poor visibility, that visual observation of marine mammals can be ineffective. Passive Acoustic Monitoring is a technique to enhance visual observations.
Typical PAM systems comprise a short towed array of hydrophones spanning the full frequency range of cetacean species together with a PC running software for the interpretation of the acoustic data.
EPI can provide Passive Acoustic Monitoring systems and operators to the oil, gas and associated industries enabling monitoring of cetaceans in accordance with IAGC and UKOOA guidelines.
All our PAM operators are fully trained and hold valid offshore medical and survival certificates
